The Hang Seng Index (HSI) serves as a standard market benchmark that reproduces the overall Performance of the Hong Kong stock market. The HSI was launched on 24 November 1969 and is one of the initial stock market indexes in Hong Kong. The HSI measures the performance of the leading and most liquid companies listed in Hong Kong. A market capitalization-weighted index of 40 of the largest companies that trade on the Hong Kong Exchange. 

The HSI is free-float-adjusted MV weighted index with a 10% cap on individual securities. The index aims to capture the leadership of the Hong Kong exchange and covers approximately 65% of its total market capitalization. 

With the use of wide analysis together with external consultation the HIS HSI constituent stocks are selected. To be qualified for selection a company must be among those that comprise top 90% of the total market value of all ordinary shares and must be among those that comprise top 90% of the total turnover on the Stock Exchange of Hong Kong Limited “SEHK” and also should have a listing history of 24 months. The Hang Seng members are also categorized into one of four sub-indexes based on the main lines of business including commerce and finance, industry, utilities, and properties.
