What This Means
The StockMaster Universe F&O Margin Requirement Calculator is a practical tool designed to help futures and options traders estimate how much trading capital may be required before entering an F&O position.
Margin is an important part of derivatives trading because traders can control a relatively large contract value with a smaller amount of capital. However, leverage also increases the potential impact of market movements on trading capital.
This calculator allows traders to estimate their contract value, margin requirement, safety buffer, recommended capital, capital utilisation and leverage.
What Is F&O Margin?
F&O margin is the amount of capital that a trader may need to maintain with a broker to open and maintain a derivatives position.
For futures and short options, the required margin can represent only a portion of the total contract value. For an option buyer, the premium paid is generally the primary upfront amount required for the position.
For example, if a futures contract has a value of ₹18,75,000 and the estimated margin requirement is 15%, the estimated margin would be ₹2,81,250.
This means the trader may control a much larger contract value than the capital deposited as margin.
How to Use the Margin Calculator
Enter your available trading capital and select the safety buffer you want to maintain.
Then add your F&O positions.
For each position, enter:
- Futures or option type
- Trading price or option premium
- Lot size
- Number of lots
- Estimated margin percentage
You can add up to five positions to analyse a multi-position portfolio.
After clicking Calculate Margin Requirement, the calculator provides a detailed breakdown.
What Does the Calculator Show?
The StockMaster Universe calculator displays:
- Total contract value
- Estimated margin required
- Safety buffer
- Recommended capital
- Available capital
- Capital remaining
