Estimated Year-by-Year HECS-HELP Schedule

This is a planning estimate, not an ATO assessment.

Year Income Compulsory Voluntary Indexation Ending Debt
Important: HECS-HELP is not a conventional interest-bearing loan. HELP debts are subject to annual indexation and compulsory repayments are based on repayment income. Actual repayments are calculated by the Australian Taxation Office after your tax return is assessed. Employer withholding is an estimate toward the eventual compulsory repayment.
Disclaimer: This calculator provides general estimates for educational purposes. It is not an ATO assessment and does not constitute tax, financial or legal advice. Actual repayment amounts may differ depending on your repayment income, reportable fringe benefits, reportable super contributions, net investment losses, exempt foreign employment income, loan balance, timing and applicable legislation.

What Is a HECS-HELP Repayment?

HECS-HELP repayments are compulsory repayments that apply when your repayment income reaches the applicable Australian threshold. Unlike a conventional personal loan, your compulsory repayment is based on your repayment income rather than a fixed monthly loan repayment.

What Is Repayment Income?

Repayment income can be different from taxable income. It can include taxable income together with amounts such as reportable fringe benefits, reportable super contributions, net investment losses and certain exempt foreign employment income.

Can I Make Voluntary HECS-HELP Repayments?

You can make voluntary repayments in addition to compulsory repayments. Voluntary payments can reduce your outstanding HELP debt, although you should consider your overall financial circumstances before making additional payments.

The HECS-HELP Repayment Calculator is a free Australian tool that helps students and graduates estimate their compulsory HECS-HELP repayment based on their repayment income and outstanding HELP debt. Enter your current HECS-HELP balance and estimated repayment income to see your estimated annual repayment along with monthly, fortnightly and weekly equivalents. The calculator also shows the applicable repayment rate and explains how your income affects your compulsory repayment. You can optionally enter an additional voluntary repayment, expected annual income growth and an estimated annual indexation rate to explore how your HECS-HELP debt could change over time. The tool provides an estimated year-by-year repayment schedule, projected debt balance, total compulsory repayments, voluntary payments and estimated indexation. It is designed to make the Australian HELP repayment system easier to understand and useful for financial planning. Results are estimates for educational purposes only and may differ from the actual amount calculated by the Australian Taxation Office.
