Risk–Reward Interpretation

Risk Disclaimer: This calculator is for educational and informational purposes only. It does not provide investment advice or a recommendation to buy or sell any financial instrument. Actual F&O results may differ due to slippage, brokerage, taxes, liquidity, gaps and market conditions.

The StockMaster Universe F&O Risk–Reward Analyzer helps traders evaluate the potential risk and reward of a futures or options trade before entering a position. Enter your entry price, stop-loss, target price, trading capital, maximum risk per trade and F&O lot size to estimate your potential loss, potential profit, position size and Risk ratio.

What Is a Risk–Reward Ratio in F&O Trading?

The Risk ratio compares the amount a trader is willing to lose with the potential profit from a trade.

For example, if a trader risks ₹2,000 to potentially make ₹4,000, the trade has a Risk ratio of 1:2.

A higher potential reward relative to the defined risk can make a trade setup more attractive, but the ratio alone does not determine whether a trade will be profitable. Market volatility, probability of success, execution quality, slippage, brokerage and other trading costs can affect the actual outcome.

How the F&O Risk–Reward Analyzer Works

Enter the following information:

Entry Price: The planned price at which you intend to enter the trade.

Stop Loss: The price at which you plan to exit if the trade moves against you.

Target Price: The price at which you plan to take your expected profit.

Trading Capital: The amount of capital allocated to your trading account or strategy.

Maximum Risk Per Trade: The percentage of your trading capital you are prepared to risk on one trade.

F&O Lot Size: The number of units contained in one futures or options contract lot.

The calculator then estimates the risk per unit, reward per unit, maximum permitted risk, recommended number of units, complete lots, actual trade risk and potential profit.

Example of F&O Risk–Reward Calculation

Suppose a trader plans a Long trade with:

  • Entry Price: ₹25,000
  • Stop Loss: ₹24,800
  • Target Price: ₹25,400

The potential risk per unit is ₹200, while the potential reward per unit is ₹400.

Therefore:

Risk = 200 : 400 = 1 : 2

This means the trader is defining ₹1 of potential risk for every ₹2 of potential reward.

The actual position size will depend on the trader’s available capital, maximum risk percentage and F&O lot size.

Why Position Sizing Matters in F&O Trading

Futures and options can involve significant leverage, which means a relatively small movement in the underlying asset can produce a substantial change in the value of a position.

Position sizing helps traders connect their trade setup with their risk limit.

Instead of asking only:

“How much can I make?”

a disciplined trader can also ask:

“How much can I lose if my stop-loss is hit?”

The StockMaster Universe Risk–Reward Analyzer is designed to make this calculation easier before a trade is placed.

Long and Short F&O Trades

The calculator supports both Long and Short positions.

For a Long / Buy position, the stop-loss is below the entry price and the target is above the entry price.

For a Short / Sell position, the stop-loss is above the entry price and the target is below the entry price.

The calculator automatically validates the price relationship based on the selected position type.

What Does 1:2 Risk–Reward Mean?

A 1:2 Risk ratio means that the potential reward is twice the defined risk.

For example:

Risk = ₹1,000
Potential Reward = ₹2,000

Risk = 1:2

It does not mean that the trader is guaranteed to make ₹2,000. The target may not be reached, and the actual result can differ because of market movement and execution conditions.

Important F&O Risk Management Reminder

Risk–reward analysis is only one part of trading discipline. Traders should also consider volatility, liquidity, position size, margin requirements, option Greeks, implied volatility, time to expiry and the possibility of gaps or rapid price movements.

The calculator should therefore be used as a planning and educational tool rather than as a signal generator.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is an F&O Risk–Reward Calculator?

An F&O Risk–Reward Calculator estimates the potential risk and reward of a futures or options trade based on the entry price, stop-loss, target and position size.

What is a good Risk ratio?

There is no universal ratio that is suitable for every strategy. Traders should consider the probability of the trade succeeding along with the potential reward and risk.

Can I use this calculator for NIFTY and BANK NIFTY?

Yes. Enter the applicable entry price, stop-loss, target and current contract lot size for the instrument you are analysing.

Can I use it for stock futures?

Yes. The calculator can be used for futures positions by entering the applicable lot size.

Can I use it for options?

Yes. You can use the tool for option trades by entering the option’s entry premium, stop-loss premium, target premium and applicable lot size.

Does the calculator guarantee profits?

No. The calculator only performs mathematical risk–reward and position-sizing calculations. It cannot predict market direction or guarantee trading profits.

Why is my recommended lot quantity zero?

If one complete F&O lot would exceed your maximum permitted risk based on the selected capital, risk percentage and stop-loss distance, the calculator may recommend zero lots. This indicates that the selected trade size does not fit within the defined risk limit.
